Our Heritage

In the spring of 1973, the House of James Book and Record Shop opened its doors in Mission. The bookshop, managed by Lando Klassen, evolved from the House of James coffeehouse ministry which began in 1970. The name House of James is taken from the book James in the Bible, where the theme of putting faith to work is emphasized. Beginning in a 12 x 40 foot space with a suite in the back where Lando and several friends lived – you could get a room and board with Klassen for only $100.00 per month. Of course, the food was only sandwiches and soup, maybe pork and beans too.

Growth

The store has grown dramatically over the years through several locations and now that the latest expansion is complete, it is 12,500 square feet and employs 30 people. Customer service and a wide selection have always been a foundation of House of James. Lando and Kathy Klassen see their store as a resource center for Christians and an accepting place for seekers. Their mission statement stresses practicing excellence, integrity and a Christ like servant attitude in everything they do.

With this expansion the House of James staff is able to serve you better. A much larger coffeehouse and expanded menu including Gelato (Italian ice cream) and live music almost every week makes this a compelling place to visit. A larger used book area helps highlight the gems from the past. The children’s book and toy area have also dramatically increased helping to fulfill their commitment to serving families with quality products.

Our Store Today

Lando says, “I see our store and coffeehouse as a community gathering place where folks meet for coffee or lunch with friends, enjoy live music, a comedy night, meet an author or take part in a book discussion club. And of course find the best selection of books, Bibles, music and gifts.”
