Christmas Gift Guide 2007

Overfilled agendas. Writing all your cards in a single night. Pots and pans all over the kitchen.

As we all struggle through this season's hype and hustle, we'd like to remind you that we're the store that says "Merry Christmas" and means it. We'll never call our center piece a "holiday tree". We're a store that knows, and believes, in what we're selling.

We know from experience that the products on these pages have the potential to illuminate: heart, mind and soul.

So this season, say Merry Christmas from the heart.

Ace Collins
$29.99

Now you and your family can deepen your celebration of Christ’s birth as you learn the stories and spiritual significance of our most cherished holiday songs and traditions.

Do you understand the meaning of “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen”? Why do we use red and green at Christmas? What are the origins of the Christmas tree? Do you know the unusual history behind “O Holy Night”?

Written by popular music historian and bestselling author Ace Collins, the three books in this beautiful boxed set unlock the origins and meanings of best-loved carols, hymns, and songs. They also explain traditions as familiar yet little understood as mistletoe, ornaments, stockings, and holly. From the cloisters of fifth-century monks, to the frontlines of World War II, to Hollywood sets and Nashville recording studios, Collins takes you on a journey that will warm your heart and enrich your experience of this brightest of holiday seasons.

Jerry Camery-Hoggatt
$20.99

When everything was ready, Pudge got to turn on the lights . . . and all at once, like magic . . . it was Christmas."

Mother was only four-foot-eleven-inches tall on the outside, but when she was at her best she stood eleven-foot-four on the inside. And every Christmas she was at her best. Mother would carefully decorate a twelve-foot Christmas tree and load extravagant presents beneath its branches, and the magic of the holiday would begin.

Then one year, everything changed. Mother cried on Christmas. As her sons tried to encourage her, they learned what it means to give good gifts--to be eleven-foot-four on the inside.

When Mother Was Eleven-Foot-Four is beautifully illustrated and masterfully written for children ages four through eight and anyone young at heart. Your family will treasure it each year as a heart-warming story of hope and grace--a reminder that Christmas is a celebration of God's extravagant gift to us.

Ruth Bell Graham
$15.99

When a young mountain boy is caught alone in a sudden snowstorm, he takes refuge in a cabin his grandfather had helped to build many years before.  The woman living there shelters the boy, attends to his badly swollen ankle, and spends the snowbound hours telling the Christmas story--beginning with creation and concluding with the resurrection.

In a magnificent blend of a contemporary setting with the history of God's redeeming love, Ruth Bell Graham has created a wonderful and unique version of the Christmas story.  The rich texture of Richard Jesse Watson's illustrations makes One Wintry Night a captivating reading experience and a family treasure.

With both instant appeal and an aura of timelessness, One Wintry Night will fascinate both those who have heard the Bible story many times and those who know only a few details.  More than a half a million copies of this Christmas classic have already been sold.

Dandi Daley Mackall

Sale! $14.99

This gentle Christmas book introduces the original St. Nicholas and tells why we give gifts in remembrance of the greatest gift of all. Nick is much more interested in contemplating his presents under the tree than he is in being dragged along for last-minute shopping with his dad. But while his father’s off shopping, Nick hears someone say his name—it’s a mall Santa, telling a group of children a story about the original St. Nick. In the long-ago story, a wealthy boy named Nicholas is moved by the sight of poor children and decides to use his family’s wealth to help the needy, starting anonymously with his less-fortunate friends. Young Nick is inspired as at last he—and young readers—understand the joy of giving. A note at the end explains how the story of this early Nicholas might have grown into the Santa Claus of legend. Bright, festive artwork accompanies the text of master storyteller Dandi Mackall, who reminds children that God gave us the greatest gift ever given.

Ann Spangler has prepared six weeks of devotions focused on six key names of God, drawn from her bestselling books, to create a unique Christmas devotional.

For hundreds of years, Christians have prepared for Christmas by carefully observing the four-week season leading up to it. So four weeks for Advent and nearly two weeks for Christmas makes six weeks, which is why Ann Spangler has prepared this six-week Christmas devotional.

Drawing from her bestselling books Praying the Names of God and Praying the Names of Jesus, Spangler selected six names or titles—including Immanuel, Yeshua, and Bright Morning Star. Each name offers a week’s worth of devotions focusing on God, the miraculous birth of his son, and the promise of his return. John Ortberg
$15.99
Sale! $14.99

Remember the thrill of winning at checkers or Parcheesi? You become the Master of the Board - the victor over everyone else, but what happens after that, asks bestselling author John Ortberg. You know the answer: It all goes back in the box. You don't get to keep one token, one chip, one game card. In the end, the spoils of the game add up to nothing.

Using popular games as a metaphor for our temporal lives, 'When the Game is Over...' neatly sorts out what's fleeting and what's permanent in God's kingdom. Being Master of the Board is not the point; being rich toward God is. Winning the game of life on Earth is a temporary victory; loving God and other people with all our hearts is an eternal one.

Using humour, terrific stories, and a focus on winning 'the right trophies', Ortberg paints a vivid picture of the priorities that all Christians will want to embrace.

John Eldredge

In Desire, formerly titled The Journey of Desire, John Eldredge writes of the journey people must take to find the life they prize. And the guide that has been given to all is the desire set deep within, the desire often overlooked or mistaken for something else or even ignored.

"Contrary to what you may have heard in church, desire is the key to the Christian life," says John Eldredge. "When we lose desire, we lose passion for God-and everything else. This book will unlock your God-given passions and desires so that you can find the life God meant you to live.

In this groundbreaking book, Eldredge invites readers to acknowledge the significance of desire, abandon resignation, and embark on an adventure he calls "our heart's most important journey."

Lee Strobel

The Case for the Real Jesus: A Journalist Investigates Current Attacks on the Identity of Christ

From college classrooms to bestselling books to the Internet, the historic picture of Jesus is under an intellectual onslaught. This fierce attack on the traditional portrait of Christ has confused spiritual seekers and created doubt among many Christians – but can these radical new claims and revisionist theories stand up to sober scrutiny?

Has modern scholarship debunked the traditional Christ? Has the church suppressed the truth about Jesus to advance its own agenda? What if the real Jesus is far different from the atoning Savior worshipped through the centuries?

In The Case for the Real Jesus, former award-winning legal editor Lee Strobel explores such hot-button questions as: • Did the church suppress ancient non-biblical documents that paint a more accurate picture of Jesus than the four Gospels? • Did the church distort the truth about Jesus by tampering with early New Testament texts? • Do new insights and explanations finally disprove the resurrection? • Have fresh arguments disqualified Jesus from being the Messiah? • Did Christianity steal its core ideas from earlier mythology?

Evaluate the arguments and evidence being advanced by prominent atheists, liberal theologians, Muslim scholars, and others. Sift through expert testimony. Then reach your own verdict in The Case for the Real Jesus.

For everyone who has ever been in a pit-or is in one now-Beth Moore urges readers in her book Get Out of That Pit not to believe for one second that God has forgotten them. It was a truth she could pass to them from her years of pit-dwelling. What she learned in being delivered from that muck and darkness-shared in that very personal book-are lessons for us all about the healing to be found in Jesus.

In this companion devotional journal, she continually points readers to the deliverance that awaits if they will lift their eyes, their voices, and their hands to the Power who can rescue them completely, as the psalmist did in Psalm 40. The scriptures, thought-provoking questions, prayers, and room for reflection within this lovely journal will assure fellow travelers that no matter how they got stuck, no matter how long they've been down, whether they think they deserve it or not, their Redeemer is waiting. And He has promised that they can begin this very day to Get Out of That Pit once and for all.

"To search the sacred Scripture is very good and most profitable for the soul. For, 'like a tree which is planted near the running waters,' so does the soul watered by sacred Scripture also grow hearty and bear fruit in due season," writes John of Damascus in Orthodox Faith (4.17).

By helping us to read holy writings with ancient eyes, the church fathers help us drink deeply from the only water that can give us true life.

Edited by Cindy Crosby and Thomas C. Oden, this guide to prayer and reflection combines excerpts from the writings of the church fathers as found in the Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture (ACCS) with a simple structure for either daily or weekly reading and prayer.

Included are 52 weeks of readings following cycle A of the Revised Common Lectionary. You can read through them in order or by thematic interest. Each day you will also find a simple opening and closing prayer drawn from the prayers and hymns of the ancient church.

Mackenzie Allen Philip's youngest daughter, Missy, has been abducted during a family vacation, and evidence that she might have been brutally murdered is found in an abandoned shack deep in the Oregon wilderness. Four years later, in the midst of his Great Sadness, Mack receives a suspicious note, apparently from God, inviting him back to that shack for a weekend.

Against his better judgment, he arrives at the shack on a wintry afternoon and walks back into his darkest nightmare. What he finds there will change Mack's world forever.

In a world where religion seems to grow increasingly irrelevant The Shack wrestles with the timeless question, "Where is God in a world so filled with unspeakable pain?" The answers Mack gets will astound you, and perhaps transform you as much as it did him. You'll want everyone you know to read this book!

Our Thoughts about The Shack by William P. Young

Young uses the genre of allegorical fiction to unveil truths about the pain of mankind and nature of God.  His portrayal of God as a loving, caring, involved and ever present comforter is particularly meaningful and healing for those who, like the author, have experienced abuse or neglect by their fathers, or who have suffered deep pain and loss while wondering where God was.  It has been said that the only way out is through, and the shack is the metaphor for the difficult place of being stuck,  the place we must visit, the door to go through on which the other side is…well, a much different life.
In the spirit of John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress, and biblical parables that Jesus told, the story is true to truth.  As a hymn sings, “A mighty fortress is our God”, this author writes there is a Savior who longs to “gather her chicks under her wings” (Luke 13:34).  We believe the reading of this book will lead many from doubt to faith, and fear to love as they discover God is faithful and loving, and yes, even fun.  Remember, it’s fiction, not theology. You don’t have to agree with everything written in its pages, probably you won’t.  You may be surprised how you are impacted through this story.
Subjects touched on in this book include, pain, character of God, the Trinity, forgiveness, God speaking, evil, good, and justice.
On being asked if the story is real, Young replies,
“Is the story ‘real’?  The story is fiction.  I made it up.  Now, having said that, I will add that the emotional pain with all its intensity and the process that tears into Mack’s heart and soul are very real.  I have my ’shack’, the place I had to go through to find healing.  I have my Great Sadness…that is all real.  And the conversations are very real and true.  While Mack experiences some particulars that I have not …there are depths of pain and shame and hopelessness that I have experienced, that Mack did not.  And I know people who have suffered exactly what Mack suffers in the story.
So is the story true?  The pain, the loss, the grief, the process, the conversations, the questions, the anger, the longing, the secrets, the lies, the forgiveness…all real, all true.  The story in particular… fiction… but….  Then there is God who emerges so very real and true, unexpected and yet not unexpected, but surprising and…
So… is all this real?  Is all this true?  I suppose each of us has to decide for ourselves, don’t we?”
